Laphroaig is certainly one of the most renowned distilleries on Islay. It was founded in 1815 by Alexander and Donald Johnston. The brothers operated the distillery for 20 years until Donald bought out his brother and continued running the distillery independently. The ownership of the distillery remained in the same family for over 100 years. Through a few twists and turns, Beam Suntory is the current owner.
The distillery's core range includes three different 10-year-olds, with the annual cask-strength release garnering a solid following. In addition to these, the core range includes Quarter Cask, Lore, and a 25-year-old cask-strength annual release.
The Laphroaig Cairdeas Fino Cask enjoyed today is the 2018 Cairdeas release. Each year, the Islay island hosts the Feis Ile festival. During this week, each of the island's distilleries has its own day, and they produce festival bottles or releases that are sold directly to festivalgoers from the distillery. Laphroaig has named its bottles Cairdeas, which means friendship in Gaelic. It boasts a comfortable 51.8% alcohol content and has been finished in Fino Sherry casks.
